Mirjam Linschooten was born and raised in the Netherlands. Her work and research as a visual artist developed within the contexts of various locations, among which Istanbul, Cairo, Morocco and Paris — where she lived for almost ten years.

In her artistic practice Mirjam investigates the role of memory institutions as museums and archives in the construction of stories around culture and history. She uses different mediums, including installation, photography, film, and writing to explore various forms of collecting, interpreting, and display. The result is often a collaborative work, which counterbalances how dominant institutions tell stories: unexpected objects of heritage, new additions to a museum collection, or a forgotten history made visible. As such, language and literature are deeply connected to her interest in representation and the ways in which society deals with (collective) memory.
