The Bureau of Sadness

Sad people, crying people, angry people and depressed people: unite!

What is the potential of our sadness? Why has sadness historically been attributed to femininity? In this program we open the bureau for sad people round the world and listen to their complaint. Sad people, crying people, angry people and depressed people: unite!

“It can be rebellious not to be made happy by what should make you happy. This sadness is not always or only about a personal revelation; even when eyes well with tears, those tears do not always form words. It is a sadness that can be too difficult to reveal to ourselves, let alone to others, because it is sadness with the world and thus sadness in the world.” — Sara Ahmed, Living a Feminist Life

This program builds on an important moment in internet feminism: the sad girl theory. Sad girl theory has never expanded into a written text, instead it was made up out of instagram posts. We continue this legacy.
