Many things happen when you mention the word slavery. People look away, start to yawn or say that we shouldn’t talk about it: after all, it was such a long time ago.

For many people, slavery is a confusing concept, something that was terrible and took place very far away from here, a very long time ago. Even though it is not that long ago and it took place alarmingly close: some issues don’t have meaning until they are presented as a story. Until they are given a face. Inspired by slave narratives from the American South, performers tell penetrating stories about their ancestors who grew up in imprisonment. With family stories and accounts passed down through generations.
