What does language sound like when it breaks free from colonial structures? Inspired by Kamau Brathwaite’s concept of nation language — the language of Caribbean and African communities, rooted in oral traditions, resistance, and cultural transmission — this program explores how language becomes an expression of identity and defiance.

Brathwaite rejects terms like “dialect” or “slang,” arguing that what is often seen as deviation is, in fact, rooted in African source languages, distinct linguistic principles and expressions that stem from oral traditions. Nation language becomes a symbol of resistance against linguistic oppression, embodying the failure of attempts to erase it. It is a language that carries history, affirms identity, and resurrects.

This program celebrates the multilingual landscape of the Netherlands, featuring voices that stretch and reshape the boundaries of Dutch. In the space between loss and renewal, new forms of speech and writing take shape. Leana Boven reflects on the emotional, political, and linguistic distance from the Indigenous language and the ongoing search to reclaim it. Benzo Karim’s latest collection demonstrates how a new syntax creates space for multiple identities. Seynabou Sonko’s work, in French, explores the potential of Creole language structures and the notion of dialectical excess.

Seynabou Sonko reads from her French-language novel Djinns, which explores a protagonist shaped by Western, Sufi, and African spiritual frameworks. Through fluid, oral-style narration, Sonko captures a fragmented yet rich diasporic consciousness.

Language as memory, rupture, and creative reinvention. Like an earworm with the force of a drum, a rhythm that embeds itself in the body.
