In her book Listening Practice (forthcoming), Miriam Rasch explores how listening requires both consistency and openness. Listening is not the same as understanding and is also not the same as being understood. The assumption that polarisation can be countered by listening to each other is therefore also only an assumption, and not a definite truth. Maybe we will only become further removed once we listen to each other. Maybe we don’t even hear the same thing. During Rehearsals for Listening four writers of fiction, poetry and nonfiction respond to the ethics of interruptions. Instead of seeing misunderstandings as empty mistakes, they will be presented in their abundance of meanings. Do we have the courage to stay with the misunderstanding, to hear it?
