The order created from these dimensions is arranged by some intuitive grasp of how the world might be put together. On Imagining A Future with Vernacular Architecture is a low-stimulus collage workshop developed specifically for people of colour to gather, reflect, and create their own visual languages and visions for the future.

Together, we will explore vernacular architecture: building traditions that emerge from local knowledge, materials, climates, and cultural practices. Often developed outside formal architectural institutions, vernacular architecture reflects how communities adapt to and live in relationship with their environment. It offers important perspectives on sustainability, belonging, memory, and alternative ways of imagining the future.

While open to all BIPOC, this workshop also specifically invites members of Moluccan diasporas in the Netherlands to connect stories from the diaspora to connective ongoing stories from the Maluku Islands. In particular, contributors from the diaspora are asked to bring images of their family members that they would like to collage with.

Host Isaiah Lopaz will be joined by writer and architect Pierre Adelaar Ajawaila for a conversation about his visual archive, architectural practice, and future imaginaries. Drawing on shared images and themes from the discussion, Isaiah will then guide participants through a collage workshop in which they are invited to write, create, and develop their own visual responses.
