Sunni Lamin Barrow (b. 1998) is a multi-award-winning pluridisciplinary artist from The Gambia, now based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Through his artistic orbits and parallel creative journeys, Sunni’s work delves into the complex discourse surrounding African queer refugee experiences. His art explores the intricate tapestry of identity and space, profound love, solitude, the intersection of queerness and blackness, global citizenship, and the essence of kinship in our contemporary era.
In September 2023, Sunni unveiled his debut solo performance, “A Fist Of Tongues.” This powerful piece, nominated for the prestigious BNG Bank Theatre Prize, has been hailed as one of the most compelling productions of the recent Dutch theatre season. The award announcement is slated for September 6, 2024. In this introspective work, Sunni orchestrates a round-table dialogue among his multiple selves—a cathartic intervention aimed at reconciling his solitary, traumatic past and forging a new future. This performance continues its tour across the Netherlands in September 2024.
In Sunni’s quest to imbue Spoken Word Poetry with greater depth and dimension, Sunni has gained admission to Das Theater. There, he aims to challenge himself by developing spoken word theatre as a distinct genre, both to advance his trajectory as a pluridisciplinary artist and to cement the legacy he aspires to leave behind.
