Bernice Vreedzaam (Suriname, 1972) takes a detour that life sometimes forces, back to her first love: language.

During a tour of study interests, she ended up at Doctors Without Borders, where she learned to write for the donor magazine and the press department about the experiences in the countries and conflict areas visited. She eventually took the resulting short stories and poems to the theater where, in addition to being a regular hostess and performer, she worked as a PR employee and programmer. She subsequently fulfilled these tasks for various Amsterdam venues and cultural organizations.

In her current position as a bookseller and (freelance) literature programmer, she uses her poet/writer as the most important tool. She prefers books that relate to her own background as part of the African diaspora.
