She has worked for a wide range of institutions and festivals, including the Nederlands Theaterfestival, Theater Utrecht, Theater Rotterdam, Theater Bellevue, and Frascati. In this practice, she consistently operates at the intersection of content and audience: how do you present a story in such a way that it not only becomes visible but also truly resonates?

Julia Jouwe

Julia Jouwe (29) is an activist, journalist, and co-founder of The Young Papua Collective. Her Papuan name, Féje, meaning “the caring one,” reflects her dedication to community organizing, education, and storytelling. Inspired by her grandfather Nicolaas Jouwe, one of the founders of the West Papua independence movement, she explores how history, identity, and power are intertwined. In her work, she unravels dominant narratives and seeks out underrepresented perspectives, with particular attention to Indigenous voices, colonial legacies, and climate justice. Through investigative journalism, public programs, events, and workshops, she creates space for new narratives and intergenerational dialogue.

She worked successively at a small translation agency and a large multinational before switching to a career as a freelancer in 2006. A few years ago she decided that things had to change and that she wanted to focus on texts without a commercial purpose. It was time to use language again as it should be: to tell stories that need to be heard, to touch, entertain, amaze and shape people. To this end, she took additional training at the Translators’ School and has now reached the point where she can combine the many translation kilometers she has made with her first great love: the love for the book.
